Finding Reason: Child Soldiers Who Enlist “Voluntarily”

While many young children are abducted or forced to become child soldiers, there is a group of teens and young adults that actually have chosen this life for themselves. Pierre, a 17-year-old former child soldier, has lived through this experience twice and states very simply the reason he joined. "I joined twice, because I had nothing to do. The first time was in 2006. The recruiters in the camp promised me food, a job, and a military career. It didn't take much to get me to go into the bush and try my luck."

They Are Our Reason, We Are Their Hope

We are in a little city called Isulan in Mindanao, Philippines. Almost every night we have been with girl prostitutes in different cities. Last night we were stopped at the military checkpoint a few kilometers before we entered our destination. In the dusky twilight, two teenage prostitutes emerged with shy but eager smiles to greet us on our rescue mission. Despite the tragic condition of their lives, they immediately showed excitement. These girls are the reason we’re here. They are our representatives of hope, of freedom, of other girls we will meet today.

I shoot Air-soft guns at my friends for recreation and a good laugh. These are real kids with real guns forced to kill real people....and their average age is 12-15. These kids need real hearts of real people to respond in real ways. Let's open our hearts! Let's open our mouths! Let's open our wallets! Let's open up their future!
